Since the late 19th century pantomime has borrowed its star performers from other types of theatre. In the Victorian era it was popular Music Hall performers who became the stars of pantomime. In the early 20th century it was variety acts. Now television actors, sports personalities and pop stars tread the boards or theatres up and down the country at Christmas.
